Chapter 14. Deploying IPv6 in an IP Service Provider Network

This chapter continues the series of case studies by presenting the design of the IPv6 services and their deployment for an IP wholesale access provider. Unlike the example in Chapter 13, "Deploying IPv6 in an MPLS Service Provider Network," the provider network in this case does not deploy MPLS in support of its IPv4 services. The IPv6 deployment strategy matches the IP forwarding-based design of the network. This case study covers all aspects of rolling out and operating IPv6-based services, including the following:

  • Existent IPv4 network environment and IPv4 services overview

  • Review of planned IPv6 service offering

  • IPv6 deployment design objectives, design options, and the reasons for the final design selections

  • Design and implementation of basic IPv6 unicast transport services

  • Design and implementation of advanced IPv6 services such as multicast and QoS

  • Managing, operating, and troubleshooting the network

This chapter provides a practical example of deploying IPv6 in the network of an IP service provider.
