Graphical Analytic Techniques

From the Help - Animated Overviews submenu, select How To: Auto-update Graphs with New Data to view a brief video about STATISTICA's graph updating and brushing facilities, and select How To: Dynamic "Data-Graphs" Link" to view a multimedia presentation of the use of dynamic features to automatically update graphs.

Select the Options 1 tab in the graph specification dialog of any 2D or 3D graph from the Graphs menu except Graphs of Block data and Graphs of Input Data, which use default options. Use the options on this tab to set up the display of Titles, Footnotes, and the Axes. It also contains options to redraw or automatically update ("auto-update") the existing graph under certain conditions. Note that many of the settings and options available on this dialog can also be set on various tabs of dialogs available to modify existing graphs (after they have been created). Many of the options on this tab and the 2D/3D Graphs - Options 2 tab can also be set globally in the Documents/Graphs: Settings options pane in the Options dialog. Note that global options will be over-ridden by options specified on any individual specification dialog as long as the definition dialog is in use.

Title. The options in the Title group box affect the display of graph titles.

Display default title. Select the Display default title check box to display the default graph title that will contain the type of graph and the data file name used in creating it. STATISTICA Graph default titles are always displayed at the top of the graph. If you clear the Display default title check box and do not enter a Custom title (see below), created graphs will not have titles (other than axis titles).

Custom title. To include a custom default title, enter the title in the Custom title box. You can add custom titles to the top, to the right, and to the left of the plot by selecting the appropriate option (Show on top, Show on right, or Show on left, respectively) from the title drop-down box. (You can also select Off to not include the custom title in the graph.) You can specify up to three custom titles using the options in this box. Additional editing facilities are also available after the graph has been created. Note that if you prefer to show only the custom title, clear the Display default title check box.

Footnote. To display a custom footnote, enter the text for the footnote in the box provided.

Display footnote. Select the Display footnote check box to display the custom footnote that you have entered in the Footnote box. Clear this check box to remove the custom footnote from the graph.

Display Options. These options affect the display of specific components of STATISTICA's Graphs menu graphs. Note that case labels do not display in histograms.

Case labels. Use the Case labels box to specify what values will be used to label individual points on the graph. Choose either case names as case labels (select Case Names), the selected variable's values as case labels (select Variable and then specify the variable name by clicking the Variable button), or use the spreadsheet label property (when Spreadsheet is selected, the program looks for the variable that has "label" set, and uses the contents of that variable for the case labels). These labels will, for example, be used in 2D or 3D scatterplots to label the individual points.

Variable. When choosing to use a variable for Case labels, click the Variable button to display a single variable selection dialog. You can then select the variable to use for Case labels.

Display case labels. Select this check box to display the case labels in the graph. If you don't want to display case labels, clear this check box.

Display text labels (or dates) as axes values. Select the Display text labels (or dates) as axis values check box to use text (or dates) category labels on the graph axes. For example, in 2D scatterplots, if one of the variables in the scatterplot contains text values or dates then the respective axis will be labeled with those text values or dates. If this option is cleared, then the equivalent numeric values (or Julian date value) will be used to label the respective axes.

Auto Update. Use the options in the Auto Update group box to specify the way in which you want graphs to be updated. These options enable you to update an existing graph to reflect changes that you make to any options on the graph specification dialog tabs, or to reflect changes to the input data immediately in the respective graph.

Update from Spreadsheet. Select the Update from Spreadsheet option button to connect the graph directly to the spreadsheet. All changes made to your data (including selection condition changes) will be reflected in the graph. Select Auto to automatically update your graph as changes are made to your data set, select Manual to manually control when the graph should update by right-clicking on the graph and selecting Update Now from the shortcut menu, or select Locked to prevent the graph from ever updating.

Update from Analysis Dialog. When the Update from Analysis Dialog option button is selected and 1) you create a graph (or have previously created a graph), 2) return to this dialog to change any option on the Advanced, Quick, etc., tabs, and 3) click OK, the existing graph will be updated (instead of a new graph being created). For example, suppose you have a scatterplot with a linear fit, then select this option, and subsequently change the fit to polynomial; when you click OK, the linear fit in the existing graph will be replaced by a polynomial fit. Note that this option is only available if the respective graph is created in a stand-alone window (a warning will otherwise be displayed). Update when input data change. Select the Update when input data change check box to update the existing graph when there is a change in the input data. This option is useful if you want changes to the data to be reflected immediately in the graphs (of the respective data). Note this option is only available when the Update from Analysis Dialog check box is selected.

No auto updating. Select the No auto updating option button to disconnect the graph from both the data and graph creation dialog.

Scaling.  Use the options in the Scaling group box to select the desired X, Y, Z, or V coordinate display in the graph.

Axis. Select the axis (X, Y, Z, or V) from the Axis drop-down box that you want to display according to the specific type of coordinate.

Type. Select a Linear, Logarithmic, Logit, Probability, or Weibull scale type for the specified Axis in the Type box.

Linear. If this (default) option is selected the scale is untransformed, and the values are plotted along the respective axis in the standard manner.   

Logarithmic. If this option is selected, the linear (and equally spaced) scale values for the respective axis are log (base-e; i.e., natural log) transformed. Hence, only positive values can be plotted along the respective axis (since the log of a negative number is not defined).

Logit. If this option is selected, then the respective axis will be logit-scaled; specifically, if you were to make a scatterplot for a variable with values ranging from minus infinity to plus infinity (plotted on the Linear x-axis), applied the inverse logit transformation, and plotted the resulting probability values (0<p<1) on the Logit scaled y-axis, then the points in the scatterplot would form a straight line.

Probability. If this option is selected, then the respective axis will be probit (normal probability) scaled; specifically, if you were to make a scatterplot for a variable with values ranging from minus infinity to plus infinity (plotted on the Linear x-axis), applied the inverse probit transformation (i.e., computed the respective values for the normal probability integral), and plotted the resulting probability values (0<p<1) on the Probability scaled y-axis, then the points in the scatterplot would form a straight line.

Weibull. If this option is selected then the respective axis will be scaled so that it is suitable for Weibull probability plotting; specifically, the values on the axis will be transformed to ln[ln(1/(1-x))], where ln refers to the natural log. Weibull probability plotting is also discussed in detail in the section Weibull and Reliability/Failure Time Analysis - Introductory Overview.

Automatically close this dialog after graph is created. STATISTICA does not close the dialog after the graph is created. Select the Automatically close this dialog after Graph is created check box to display the graph and simultaneously close the graph dialog. However, note that when you select this option, after you create the graph (and after the dialog closes) all selections that were made on this dialog are no longer "remembered;" in other words, setting this option will automatically close the current analysis after the graph has been created. This option is not available when the Auto update option (see above) is selected.
