- Switch to Microsoft New Phonetic. The input method icon and input language icon for Microsoft New Phonetic will be displayed on the taskbar.
- Type the phonetic symbols of the Chinese words/phrases you want to enter. For example, type phonetic symbols for "·L³n¿é¤Jªk". During the process, you will see:
- If the words on the composition window are not what you want, use the mouse or press the Left/Right Arrow key to move the cursor to the left of the character you want to edit, press the Down Arrow key to open the candidate window, and then press the number key corresponding to the desired candidate select and confirm.
- If all characters on the composition window are correct, press Enter. The composition window disappears. The confirmed characters are transferred to the text editor.

Note:
- In desktop UI, if there are more than 9 candidates in the candidate window, you can press the Expand/Collapse button on the candidate window to expand or collapse the candidate window. You can also exand or collpase the candidate window by pressing the Right Arrow or Left Arrow key.
- In Metro style UI, when you move the cursor pointer to the candidate window, arrow icons might be displayed at the beginning and/or end of the candidate window, which indicates more candidates are available. You can click the arrow icons to view other candidates.
- If you are using a touch screen, you can also flick through the candidate window to view more candidates. You can tap the desired candidate to select and enter it.
