Routing

Understanding how routing works can help you configure the Microsoft Exchange Server for efficient message transfer. Messages are submitted to the Microsoft Exchange Server by a user, another Microsoft Exchange Server, or a foreign mail system through a connector or gateway.

Messages can be routed to the following:

• A recipient on the same server.
• A recipient on a different server in the same site.
• A recipient in a different site or foreign system.
