Debugging SNMP Traps
The Event to Trap Translator converts selected Windows NT events, from the three Windows NT event logs, to SNMP traps and sends them to a site. At the site, SNMP traps are filtered for specific traps, and these are written to the database. Also, the traps can be sent to other network management consoles besides the SMS Administrator.
To use the SNMP traps functionality, complete the following steps.
On the client that will be used to send traps:
- Install TCP/IP and SNMP.
- Use the Windows NT Control Panel to configure the SNMP client.
- Install the SMS SNMP and translation agent files.
- Use the Personal Computer Properties in the SMS Administrator to configure the SNMP clients.
- If you want to use security traps from the client, use the Windows NT User Manager to enable security logging on the client.
- If you are going to trap file activity on the client, use the Windows NT File Manager to enable security auditing for those directories.
At the site to receive traps
- Install TCP/IP and SNMP.
- Configure a filter for incoming traps.
