Microsoft Mail SMTP Gateway Proxy Migration Tool

The Microsoft Mail SMTP Gateway Proxy Migration tool (Migsmtp.exe) helps replace a Microsoft Mail SMTP gateway with a Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Service by reducing the level of administrator intervention. It preserves current Internet addresses of the recipients and adds them as secondary proxies to the Microsoft Exchange Server global address list, which eliminates the need for the end users to republish their new Internet address for their business associates. This tool is useful for the following scenarios:

Replace a single Microsoft Mail SMTP gateway and associated postoffice with Microsoft Exchange and the Internet Mail Service.

Migrate all users. Run Migsmtp.exe. Shut down the Microsoft Mail SMTP gateway and put its IP address on the Internet Mail Service computer.

Replace a Microsoft Mail SMTP gateway and networked postoffices with multiple Microsoft Exchange servers and the Internet Mail Service.

Migrate all users to servers. Visit each server and process recipients to assign proxies using Migsmtp.exe.

Replace a Microsoft Mail SMTP gateway with the Internet Mail Service and Microsoft Exchange Server.

Remaining postoffices are connected to Microsoft Exchange by using the Microsoft Mail Connector.

Replace a postoffice server.

Perform directory synchronization. Modify proxies by using Migsmtp.exe. When you migrate users to Microsoft Exchange Server, rerun Migsmtp.exe to modify existing proxy addresses. This ensures that users maintain the addressing attributes they had in Microsoft Mail.
