Improving TCP/IP Startup Times

When starting the Microsoft Exchange Client, one of the more common reasons for slow startup is the failure to resolve the Microsoft Exchange Server Transport Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) host name. This section outlines a procedure for eliminating host name resolution problems on client computers running TCP/IP.

Note Before troubleshooting TCP/IP, make sure the Microsoft Exchange Client is not running.

To troubleshoot TCP/IP

In Control Panel, double-click the Mail icon.

In the Services tab, select Microsoft Exchange Server.

Choose Properties.

In the General tab, type the correct Microsoft Exchange Server name and the mailbox name.

Choose Check Name.

After you have verified that the server name and mailbox name are correct, and choose Check Name, you can determine how much time it takes to resolve the name. If it takes more than 30 to 40 seconds to resolve the name, read the following sections to improve startup times.
