Object linking and embedding is a specification that allows users to integrate information from different applications. Perhaps the most familiar features of OLE allow applications to share data and present information in a single, compound document. OLE however goes well beyond compound documents and is really an umbrella term for all service based on the Component Object Model (COM). This includes other services like OLE Automation and OLE Controls. Simply put, OLE is all about integration.
