File-Server Networks Supported

Microsoft Jet supports most file-server and peer-to-peer networks that work on personal computers. The following networks have been tested with Microsoft Jet and are supported:

Although Microsoft Jet supports these networks equally, it’s important to note that the performance of a multiuser database system running on a peer-to-peer network may suffer depending on how the computer that’s serving as a file-server is being used.

Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 3.51 and 4.0, and LANtastic 5.0 can all be used as peer-to-peer networking systems. If the workstation is also being used to run desktop applications, there will be increased levels of disk and network I/O, which will affect performance. Also, if a user runs another application that locks the system, all users sharing the database will lose their connections to the database. This can compromise the integrity of the database. For the best performance and stability on peer-to-peer networks, make sure that a workstation containing a shared database is dedicated solely to that purpose.
