When you click a hyperlink that opens a Microsoft Access database or an Internet Web page, a new instance of Microsoft Access or Microsoft Internet Explorer starts even if one is already started on your computer.

Hyperlinks to Microsoft Access Objects

Each time you click a hyperlink to a database object, Microsoft Access checks to see if that database is open on your computer. If the database is open, the object displays in the open database. If the database is not open, a new instance of Microsoft Access starts to open the database and display the object.

NOTE: If you follow a link to a database object, and that database is opened exclusively by another user, a new instance of Microsoft Access starts and tries to open the database. When it fails, you receive the error message:

   Couldn’t use ‘<Database Name>‘; file already in use.

Hyperlinks to Internet Web Pages

Each hyperlink that contains a World Wide Web or intranet address opens a separate instance of your Web browser. To improve performance and to preserve system resources, quit your Web browser after each use before you click another Internet/intranet hyperlink in Microsoft Access.

Hyperlinks to Other Objects

If you create hyperlinks to other documents, such as Microsoft Word or Excel files, when you click the link the application starts and opens the document. If you link to another document in the same application, it opens as a separate window in the currently running instance of that application. This rule applies to multiple-document interface (MDI) applications only; that is, those applications which support opening multiple documents in the same instance of the program.
