MXL5: "File Not Found" Error Inserting or Opening Module

• Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 5.0, 5.0a

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel, when you insert a Visual Basic module sheet into a workbook, or when you open a workbook that contains a Visual Basic module, you receive the following error message:

   File not found

CAUSE

You receive this error message if the Standard OLE Types file [Standard OLE Types (PowerMac) file on the Apple Power Macintosh] is missing or damaged. This file should be located in the Type Libraries folder, which is located in the Extensions folder of the System Folder.

You may also receive this error message if Virtual Memory is not turned on, or if not enough Virtual Memory is available.

Note also that in some types of administrative installation, the Type Libraries folder is not copied to the Extensions folder in your local System Folder.

WORKAROUNDS

To resolve this problem, use the following methods.

Method 1

If the Type Libraries folder was not copied to the Extensions folder (this problem typically occurs if you run an administrative installation of Microsoft Excel), copy the Type Libraries folder from the server to your local Extensions folder.

Method 2

If the Standard OLE Types file or the Standard OLE Types (PowerMac) file is located in another location on your hard disk, move the file to the Type Libraries folder.

Method 3

Run the Microsoft Excel Setup program again, and choose the Reinstall button so that the Setup program installs the Standard OLE Types file or the Standard OLE Types (PowerMac) file to the correct location.

Method 4

If Virtual Memory is not turned on, turn it on (use the Memory control panel to do this) and restart your computer. If Virtual Memory is already turned on, increase the available amount and restart your computer.

Method 5

If, after trying Method 2 and Method 3, you continue to receive the "File not found" error message, do the following:

1. Run the Setup program you used to set up Microsoft Excel, and select the Remove All option to remove all of Microsoft Excel.

2. Move the Registration Database, PPC Registration Database, and Embedding Preferences files from the Preferences folder in the System Folder to the desktop.

3. Restart your computer.

4. Install Microsoft Excel again.

   If this procedure is successful, you can drag the Registration Database, PPC Registration Database, and Embedding Preferences files on the Desktop into the trash.
