The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 4.0, 4.0a
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 4.0

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel 4.0, when you save a protected workbook that contains a password-protected bound chart, you may experience any of the following problems:

  • You receive a general protection (GP) fault or system error, and you receive one of the following error messages:

If you are using Microsoft Excel for Windows
          --------------------------------------------

Excel caused a General Protection fault in module Excel.exe at
          001E:027E

If you are using Microsoft Excel 4.0 for the Macintosh
          ------------------------------------------------------

The application "Microsoft Excel" has unexpectedly quit, because an
          error of type 3 occurred.

        -or-

  • You are unable to re-open the workbook.

        -or-

  • You receive the error message "Unable to Read File" while attempting to open the workbook.

        -or-

  • You are prompted for a password while you attempt to open the workbook, and you receive an "Invalid Password" error message.

NOTE: You will not receive an error message if the chart is unbound. Also, you will not receive an error message if either the password for the bound chart or the password for the workbook is an empty string.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel for Windows version 4.0 and Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh version 4.0. This problem has been corrected in Microsoft Excel for Windows version 5.0 and Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh version 5.0.
