XL97: Unusual Sheet Names Appear Using Custom Sheet Template

SYMPTOMS

When you insert a worksheet in Microsoft Excel 97, the name of the worksheet may be different from the name you expected.

For example, instead of sheet names that appear as follows

   Sheet4
   Sheet5
   Sheet6

   Sheet1 (2)
   Sheet1 (3)
   Sheet1 (4)

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you use a custom worksheet template (Sheet.xlt) in the Xlstart folder.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, manually rename the worksheets. To rename a worksheet, do the following:

1. On the Format menu, point to Sheet, and then click Rename.

   -or-

   Double-click the sheet tab of the worksheet you want to rename.

2. Type the new sheet name.

3. Press ENTER.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
