XL97: Scroll Bar Missing If Control Text Is Too Long

Last reviewed: January 7, 1998
Article ID: Q172960
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

When you click List Box on the Control Toolbox toolbar and place the control on a Microsoft Excel 97 worksheet, the horizontal scroll bar may disappear.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the following conditions are true:

  • The control is linked to a cell in which the number of characters exceeds the width of the list box.

        -and-

  • You are using the List Box or Combo Box control from the Forms Toolbar or the Control Toolbox toolbar.

This behavior occurs even if text in the control is truncated. Note that other controls on the Forms toolbar or the Control Toolbox toolbar may truncate text if it is too long and fail to display horizontal scroll bars that allow you to scroll through the control.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, make the control wide enough to display the contents of the linked cell.

STATUS

This behavior is by design of Microsoft Excel 97.
