XL97: Error Formatting Chart Data Label Border

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel 97, when you format a label on a chart, you may receive the following error message:

   This program has performed an illegal operation and will be
   shut down.

If you click Details, a message similar to the following appears:

   Excel caused an invalid page fault in module Mso97.dll at
   0137:3084bc03.

When you click Close, Excel quits.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you do the following to your chart:

You apply fill effects to the background of the data labels for an entire series.
You either select or change the text in a single data label.
You format the border of that single data label.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
