The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 2.x, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, 5.0c
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 1.x, 2.x, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, 5.0a

In Microsoft Excel, headers and footers always have left and right margins of 0.75 inch. Therefore, left-aligned text in the header or footer will always begin 0.75 inch from the left edge, regardless of the left margin. Similarly, right-aligned text will always print to 0.75 on the right side.

When you use the Legal size paper option, Microsoft Excel positions left- aligned text in the header or footer approximately 1 inch from the left side. This change in margin size is to allow for the limitations of the LaserWriter when you print to legal size paper.
