Last reviewed: November 29, 1994
Article ID: Q79487
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 2.2, 3.0 and 4.0

Summary:

After choosing the Empty Trash command from the Special menu under MultiFinder or System 7.0, you may receive the error message:

The item "<FOLDER NAME>" could not be deleted because it contains
items that are in use. Do you want to continue?

This error will occur if Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh version 2.2 or 3.0 is in the background and the Trash contains a folder that contains a currently open or previously opened Microsoft Excel document. To avoid the message and empty the Trash completely, exit Microsoft Excel by choosing Exit from the File menu.
