Summary:

Excel 4.0 does not support the ability to save a file in Excel 3.0's template file format. To create an Excel 3.0 template, the document needs to be saved in Excel 3.0 file format and marked as a stationery file from the Macintosh desktop with system 7.

More Information:

Attempting to open an Excel 4.0 template file from within Excel 3.0 creates the following error message:

Stationery document is not saved in Normal Excel format. Opening
   as a nonstationery file.

The Excel 4.0 document subsequently loads as a Text file and displays garbage text or characters.

  1. Save the document in Excel 3.0 file format and close the file.

  2. Switch to the Finder and click the document to select it.

  3. From the File menu, choose Get Info.

  4. Select the Stationery Pad checkbox in the lower right of the Get Info window.
