Excel Err Msg: 'Error in Formula' when Using Manual Link

Last reviewed: November 30, 1994

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh versions 2.2, 3.0, and 4.0
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows versions 2.x, 3.0, and 4.0

SUMMARY

If you create a link formula to a worksheet named C or R and you do not place apostrophes around the filename, you will receive the following error message:

   Error in formula

This error message occurs because Microsoft Excel reserves the letters C and R for R1C1 reference style.

For example, to use the following formula

   =C!$A$1

you would have to place apostrophes around the filename, as in the following example:

   ='C'!$A$1
