XCON: MTA Terminates with 2191, 2198, 2197, and 9405 Events

SYMPTOMS

The Microsoft Exchange message transfer agent (MTA) may terminate unexpectedly with event messages similar to the following:

CAUSE

This problem occurs when an internal list within the MTA, called the Intentions List, becomes corrupt.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Exchange versions 4.0, SP1, SP2, SP3, and SP4. A supported fix is now available, but has not been fully regression-tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Service Pack that contains this fix. Contact Microsoft Product Support Services for more information.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Exchange versions 5.0 and SP1. This problem has been corrected in the latest U.S. Service Pack for Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.0.
