Cannot Uninstall Java Support for IE 3.0 for Windows NT 4.0

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to remove Java support for Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 for Windows NT 4.0 by clicking Java Reference Implementation For Windows on the Install/Uninstall tab in the Add/Remove Programs tool and then clicking Add/Remove, you may receive the following error message:

   Can't run 16-bit Windows program.
   This application is not supported by Microsoft Windows NT.

CAUSE

This is a known problem that can occur with Java support for Beta versions of Internet Explorer 3.0 for Windows NT 4.0.

RESOLUTION

To remove the files associated with Java support for Internet Explorer 3.0, install the released version of Internet Explorer 3.0, if it is not already installed, and then remove it. Note that installing and then removing Internet Explorer 3.0 in this manner does not remove the entry for Java support on the Install/Uninstall tab.

To remove the entry for Java support on the Install/Uninstall tab, remove the following registry key:

   Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
   Uninstall\Java VM

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Java Reference Implementation provided for Beta versions of Internet Explorer 3.0 for Windows NT 4.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
