The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.0 for Windows 95
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.0 for Windows NT 4.0

SUMMARY

This article describes the disk space requirements for installing and using Internet Explorer 4.0.

MORE INFORMATION

Active Setup does not always accurately calculate the amount of disk space needed for installing Internet Explorer 4.0. If the amount of disk space that Setup calculates is close to the total free space available, Setup may not finish successfully if free disk space becomes too low.

Disk Space Requirements for Internet Explorer 4.0

Internet Explorer 4.0 has the following disk space requirements (in megabytes [MB]):

  • Minimal installation: 51 MB
  • Standard installation: 58 MB
  • Full installation: 80 MB

During Setup, disk space requirements increase because the swap file grows depending on the amount of random access memory (RAM) installed in the computer. On a computer with 32 MB of RAM, the swap file may grow by 11 MB. This increases the total disk space requirements to the following:
  • Minimal installation: 62 MB
  • Standard installation: 69 MB
  • Full installation: 91 MB

On a computer with less than 32 MB of RAM (such as 16 MB or 8 MB of RAM), the swap file may grow larger than 11 MB, further increasing the total disk space requirements.

After installation, you need additional disk space as you use your computer because of swap file usage, the Internet cache, and so on. A general rule is to have at least 100 MB or 10 percent (whichever is smaller) of your primary hard disk free at all times. If the hard disk is low on free space, your computer may respond slowly and there may be excessive hard disk activity.
