The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 4.0, 4.01 for Windows 95
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 4.0, 4.01 for Windows NT 4.0

SYMPTOMS

ActiveMovie may no longer play .avi, .mov, or .mpg files on a computer running Internet Explorer 4.0.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you install another movie player program that replaces the file association for .avi, .mov, or .mpg files.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, change the file association for .avi, .mov, and .mpg files from the other movie player program to ActiveMovie. To associate .avi, .mov, and .mpg files with ActiveMovie, follow these steps:

  1. Double-click My Computer, and then click Options (or Folder Options) on the View menu.

  2. On the File Types tab, click Movie Clip in the Registered File Types box.

NOTE: There may be three Movie Clip entries, with one entry for each of the following file types:

        - AVI
        - MOV (which can include QT)
        - MPEG (which can include MPG, MP2, MPA, MPE, DAT, M1V, and ENC)

  3. Click Edit, and then double-click Play (or Open) in the Actions box.

  4. In the Application Used To Perform Action box, type the appropriate line

          <drive>\<windows>\rundll32.exe <drive>\<windows>\system\

where <drive> is the drive on which Windows is installed and <windows>
is the folder in which Windows is installed.

NOTE: Type the line exactly as it appears.

       Windows NT-Based Computer

where <drive> is the drive on which Windows is installed and <windows>
is the folder in which Windows is installed.
