SYMPTOMS

When you connect to a Web site that takes more than five minutes to return information to Internet Explorer, you may receive one of the following error messages:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer error 10060 connection timed out.
  • Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site <Web address>. The operation timed out.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the following fix:

   Wininet.dll version 4.72.2919.0

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 4.0 and 4.01 for Windows 95. An update to address this problem is now available, but is not fully regression tested and should be applied only to computers experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft does not recommend implementing this update at this time. Contact Microsoft Technical Support for more information about the availability of this update.
