PRB: ODBC Version Conflict Messages Launching Visual InterDev

Last reviewed: December 9, 1997
Article ID: Q165869
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Visual InterDev, version 1.0

SYMPTOMS

When launching Visual InterDev, an error message can occur stating that there is a version conflict between two or more ODBC system files.

CAUSE

Installing Peer Web Services on NT Workstation 4.0 will always overwrite the ODBC files ODBCINT.DLL and ODBCCP32.DLL with version 2.50.30.6 of these files even if the files that already exist are more recent. If Visual InterDev is installed first, some of the ODBC files will be the version that InterDev shipped and some will get overwritten with older versions by the Peer Web Services install.

This behavior causes the version conflict message.

RESOLUTION

To get the ODBC files back in sync, remove Visual InterDev through the Control Panel "Add/Remove Programs" applet and then reinstall.

To avoid this problem altogether, install Peer Web Services before Visual InterDev.

STATUS

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

  1. Install Visual InterDev Client on NT 4.0 Workstation.

  2. Check the version of ODBCINT.DLL and ODBCCP32.DLL in the WINNT\SYSTEM directory.

  3. Install Peer Web Services on the same machine by following these steps:
  • Right click on Network Neighborhood.
  • Select the Services Tab.
  • Select Add | Microsoft Peer Web Services | OK.
  • During the setup, accept the defaults.

Note that the versions of ODBCINT.DLL and ODBCCP32.DLL in the system dir are now 2.50.30.6.
