The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Office for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Office 97 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

When you run setup for any of the versions of Microsoft Office listed above, the following error message may appear:

   Setup Error 797

CAUSE

This problem may occur when you attempt to install Microsoft Office on a computer that has a corrupted Windows 95 swap file, Win386.swp. In addition, this problem may occur when Win386.swp is too small.

NOTE: The Windows 95 swap file may be too small if the disk drive that contains Windows runs out of disk space, or if you set a swap file that is too small.

Other Possible Causes

  1. Other programs, including Terminate and Stay Resident (TSR) and anti- virus programs, may be running.

  2. There may be files and registry keys from earlier versions of Microsoft Office on your computer.

WORKAROUND

Swap File

To work around the problem when you have a corrupted swap file, restart the computer in MS-DOS mode, delete the Win386.swp file in the Windows folder, and restart the computer.

To do this, use the following steps:

  1. On the Start menu, click Shut Down.

  2. In the Shut Down Windows dialog box, click "Restart The Computer In MS-DOS Mode", and then click Yes.

  3. At the MS-DOS prompt, switch to the Windows folder by typing

          cd <drive>:\Windows

where <drive> is the drive letter where the Windows folder is located. Typically, <drive> is c.

NOTE: The swap file exists in the Windows folder if Windows manages virtual memory settings on your computer. If you chose to manage virtual memory settings on the computer, the swap file exists at the root level of the hard disk. To determine whether Windows manages virtual memory settings, right-click My Computer, click Properties, click Performance, and then click Virtual Memory.

  4. To delete the swap file, type the following at the MS-DOS prompt:

          del Win386.swp

  5. After deleting the swap file, restart your computer.

Running Programs

Shut down any programs that are running, including TSR's and anti-virus programs. You may need to check for TSR's in Autoexec.bat, Config.sys, Win.ini and the Windows 95 registry.

Earlier Versions Of Microsoft Office

If there is an earlier version of Microsoft Office on your computer, it may need to be removed. To do this, use the following procedure.

  1. Run Setup from the media for the earlier version of Microsoft Office.

  2. Click Remove All in maintenance mode setup.

The registry key, HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Office, may also need to be removed. To do this, use the following procedure:

  1. On the Start menu, click Run.

  2. Type "regedit", without quotation marks, and click OK.

  3. Select the following registry key:

          HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft Office

  4. On the Edit menu, click Delete.

  5. On the Registry menu, click Exit.

MORE INFORMATION

If the swap file is too small, then deleting the swap file will not correct the problem. You must create more free space on the hard disk, reset the swap file to a larger size, or create a swap file on a disk drive with more disk space, and restart Windows.
