SUMMARY

Microsoft Photo Editor, Clip Gallery 3.0, and Publisher 97 rely on external graphics filters when opening graphics files. If a graphics import filter is damaged or missing, these applications will not be able to insert that type of graphic. This article describes how to use the Office 97 Setup program to reinstall the .jpg graphics filter if it has become damaged.

MORE INFORMATION

  1. On the Start Menu, point to Programs, and click Windows Explorer.

  2. Locate and open the following folder:

          C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Grphflt

  3. Rename the Jpegim32.flt file to Jpegim32.old.

  4. Insert the Office 97 compact disc and run the Setup program.

  5. When the Maintenance Mode screen appears, click Reinstall.

The Reinstall mode of the Office 97 Setup program replaces missing files and writes the associated registry key for that file. If the graphics filter was not initially installed, then the Setup program does not identify it as missing, and the Reinstall mode will not install the graphics filter. If the graphics filters have never been installed, you can choose Add/Remove when you rerun Setup in maintenance mode to install them.

You may still be able to insert .jpg files into Microsoft PowerPoint 97, Word 97, and Microsoft Excel 97 files, even if you are unable to insert them into Photo Editor, Clip Gallery, or Publisher 97 files. This is because PowerPoint 97, Word 97, and Microsoft Excel 97 can import .jpg files natively without a filter. However, Photo Editor, Clip Gallery, and Publisher 97 require Jpegim32.flt to read the JPEG File Interchange format.
