OFF97: Windows Registry Entries Remain After Remove All

Last reviewed: November 25, 1997
Article ID: Q164220
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Office 97 for Windows

IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, you should first make a backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat). Both are hidden files in the Windows folder.

SYMPTOMS

When you run Microsoft Office Setup in maintenance mode, and then click Remove All, Setup fails to remove all of the Office keys in the Windows registry.

CAUSE

Setup leaves most of the Office registry entries intact by design. The Setup program removes the values for these keys but does not remove many of the registry keys. These keys do not interfere with subsequent installations of Microsoft Office but may increase the size of the registry.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall Windows 95. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the Changing Keys And Values online Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe). Note that you should make a backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat) before you edit the registry.

Other software programs may use the same registry keys that Microsoft Office 97 creates. Deleting these registry keys may cause other programs that use the keys to fail to function properly. When this occurs, reinstall the programs.

When you install Microsoft Windows 95, perform a Custom installation of Microsoft Office 97 and install all the Office components, and then remove Microsoft Office 97, the following registry entries remain in the registry.
