SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Outlook 97 when you try to save a message that contains an attachment you copied or dragged from another message, you may receive the following error message:

  Operation failed.

Following this error, you cannot save the message.

RESOLUTION

You may be able to work around this problem by saving the attachment from the first mail message to your hard drive and then inserting the attachment into the second mail message. This procedure allows you to save the second mail message.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Outlook 97 for Windows. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Outlook 97 version 8.02 for Windows.

MORE INFORMATION

This problem may not occur consistently. The error message occurs most often under the following circumstances:

  • You receive an e-mail message that contains a file attachment (such as a Microsoft Excel workbook).

         -and-

  • You drag the attachment to a new message.

         -and-

  • You attempt to save the new message.

NOTE: When you click the attachment in the second message, the attachment's icon may appear off center within the resizing handles.

This problem may also occur if you use your right mouse button to click an attachment and from the context-sensitive menu click Copy. When you try to paste the attachment into the text area of an appointment, you may also receive the above error.
