OL97: Office 97 SR-1 Patch Form Extension not Registered

IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, you should first make a backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat). Both are hidden files in the Windows folder.

SYMPTOMS

When you install the Microsoft Office Service Release 1 Patch (SR-1), the Outlook/Exchange Forms Extension is not automatically registered.

NOTE: The Forms Extension registers correctly when you install the Microsoft Office Service Release 1 Enterprise Update.

RESOLUTION

Choose one of the following methods to ensure the extension is correctly registered:

Method 1

Download and install the E-mail Forms Fix Utility. This is available on the Microsoft Web site at:

    http://www.microsoft.com/officefreestuff/outlook/

Method 2

Modify the Registry to include the missing data.

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall Windows 95. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the Changing Keys And Values online Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe). Note that you should make a backup copy of the registry files (System.dat and User.dat) before you edit the registry.

Adding the Missing Data to the Registry

1. Quit Outlook.

2. Click Start, then click Run.

3. Type REGEDIT, then click OK.

4. Navigate to the following key:

   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\Client\Extensions

5. On the Edit menu, point to New, then click String Value and type

         Outlook/Exchange Forms Coexistence
   

   and press ENTER.

6. With the new value selected, on the Edit menu, click Modify and type the following into the Value data field:

         "4.0;C:\Program Files\
         Microsoft Office\Office\Addin\frmrdrct.dll;1;10000000000000;0;"
   

   and click OK.

   NOTE: When adding String Values in Regedit, the quotation marks are already added when the new entry is created. The above text must appear within the quotation marks and appear on one continuous line. The path indicates the default location. Include the correct path if you did not install the SR-1 Patch to this location.

7. On the Registry menu, click Exit.

The Outlook and Microsoft Exchange clients each use slightly different forms technology. When a user installs Microsoft Office 97 or Outlook, the system is configured to run Outlook. So, switching to use the Exchange client can cause slower performance.

This extension is intended for Outlook and Microsoft Exchange client users who need to switch between the two different clients. Users who upgrade permanently to Outlook, and will not need to switch back to the Exchange client, or who haven't yet upgraded to Office 97 or Outlook 97, will not need this utility. The utility is focused on substantially improving any e- mail client performance issues previously encountered by users who have installed Outlook, but continue to use the Exchange client for e-mail.
