A Drive Mapping Fails Through the Proxy Server

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Proxy Server version 1.0

SYMPTOMS

When you try to map a drive through the Proxy Server, the map fails.

CAUSE

Proxy Server has two components, one is a CERN-compliant HTTP proxy (the web proxy), and the other is a general-purpose application gateway for WinSock applications (the Winsock proxy).

The Microsoft Windows redirector is a kernel application, not a user-mode Winsock application; therefore, you cannot use the Proxy Server to connect to remote shares. Other applications that depend on the Windows redirector (such as User Manager, Server Manager, or Performance Monitor) will also fail through the Proxy Server.

WORKAROUND

Free web-based administration tools that will work through the Proxy Server are available for Microsoft Windows NT Server from http://www.microsoft.com
