Disable SNA Admin/Manager Support for Windows NT Clients

• Microsoft SNA Server, versions 2.1, 2.11, 2.11 SP1, 2.11 SP2, 3.0, 3.0 SP1, 3.0 SP2

SYMPTOMS

SNA server sponsor connections may utilize more bandwidth in LAN/WAN environments than necessary for clients that do not use SNA Server Admin/Manager components to remotely administer SNA Server.

CAUSE

SNA Server sends a large amount of information to Windows NT clients over the sponsor connection which is only needed if Admin/Manager is running on the client. This update makes it possible to disable the Admin/Manager support on Windows NT clients by adding the following registry parameter after applying the hotfix:

   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SnaBase\
   Parameters\NoManager: REG_DWORD:0|1

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in SNA Server versions 2.11, 2.11 SP1, 2.11 SP2, 3.0, 3.0 SP1, and 3.0 SP2. A supported fix is now available, but has not been fully regression-tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Service Pack that contains this fix.
