INF: Err Msg: Cannot Connect to that Server Op. Sys. Platform

Last reviewed: April 3, 1997
Article ID: Q115520

The information in this article applies to:

  - Microsoft SQL Server version 4.2

SUMMARY

When attempting to connect from a Microsoft SQL GUI (Graphical User Interface) tool to a non-Microsoft SQL Server, you will receive the error:

Cannot connect to that server operating system platform.

These tools include, but are not limited to, ISQL/W, SQL Administrator, and SQL Object Manager. This is intended design behavior as these tools are not supported against non-Microsoft server platforms. An exception is SQL Transfer Manager, where the source server can be a non-Microsoft SQL Server.

MORE INFORMATION

There are numerous third-party SQL Server administrative and utility tools available in the marketplace which are supported and tested against both Microsoft and Sybase SQL Server. Please contact the vendors of these products if you require cross-platform administrative or utility tools. For more information on these, see the Microsoft SQL Server Solutions and Services Directory, which ships with SQL Server.
