Last reviewed: April 15, 1997
Article ID: Q162021
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft SQL Server, version 4.21a
BUG #: 15031 (SQL4.21a)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install the Programmer's Toolkit (PTK) for SQL Server 4.21a on an Intel computer, the PTK Setup does not work properly if the color palette is set to any option other than 256 colors.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do either of the following:

  • Change the color palette from other options (65,536 colors or true color) to 256 colors. Then restart the computer and rerun the PTK Setup program.

NOTE: The color palette can be changed by opening Control Panel and clicking the Display icon.

    -or-

  • Start Windows NT using the VGA option.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft SQL Server version 4.21a. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

In the SQL Server Programmer's Toolkit Setup program, there is a step where the user can choose one or more installation options, such as DB-Library development libraries. If the color palette is not set to 256 colors, options are not displayed properly, and when the user continues with the setup, PTK Setup stops responding at the "File copy in progress" window. The user cannot exit from Setup by canceling the program; he or she must end the task.

NOTE: This problem does not occur on SQL Server versions 6.0 or 6.5.
