XL5: Unable to Hide Grouped Drawing Objects in Dialog

Last reviewed: December 1, 1997
Article ID: Q118945
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 5.0, 5.0c
  • Microsoft Excel for Macintosh, versions 5.0, 5.0a

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Excel version 5.0, you cannot hide grouped objects in a custom dialog box. When you group objects in a custom dialog box and set the Visible property for the objects to False, as in the following line of code

   DialogSheets(1).DrawingObjects("Group 6").Visible = False

the grouped objects will still be visible when you run the dialog box (regardless of whether you run it from a macro or choose the Run Dialog button on the Forms toolbar). However, when you run this code, the objects WILL be hidden on the dialog sheet.

WORKAROUND

To hide objects in a displayed dialog box, set the Visible property for each individual object to False. To do this, you must first ungroup the objects by doing the following:

  1. Select the group.

  2. From the Format menu, choose Placement, and then choose Ungroup.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

To group objects on a dialog sheet, hold down the SHIFT key on your keyboard and use the mouse to select each object. Then, choose Placement from the Format menu, and then choose Group.

Grouping objects makes them easier to copy and move (because you don't have to worry about re-aligning them).
