BUG: Linking VxDs with Visual Studio 97 SP1&2 Generates Error

SYMPTOMS

When attempting to build a virtual device driver (VxD) with Visual Studio, you may see the following linker error:

   fatal error LNK1190: invalid fixup found, type 0x0001

CAUSE

The new linker installed by these Visual Studio 97 Service Packs 1 and 2 do not successfully link VxDs.

RESOLUTION

The standard Visual C++ version 5 linker successfully links VxDs. Visual Studio 97 Service Pack 3 successfully links as well.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a bug in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this bug and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
