The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 95

SYMPTOMS

When you use a Windows 95-based computer to copy a read-only file to a core SMB server (such as a LAN Manager for UNIX server), you may receive the following error message:

   Error 5 - Access Denied

This occurs when using Explorer or XCOPY to copy the read-only file to the server. This does not occur when using File Manager.

CAUSE

This error message occurs because there is a mismatch between the way that the Windows 95 redirector accesses files and the way that core SMB servers expect this access.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the Windows 3.x File Manager tool (Winfile.exe) to copy the file. This file is in your Windows folder.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 95.
