Computer with USB Devices Hangs

SYMPTOMS

When you run Windows 95 OEM Service Release version 2.1 on a computer equipped with a Universal Serial Bus (USB) host adapter, the computer may stop responding (hang) in the following situations:

  • If you disable the USB Root Hub device in Device Manager while PC Card sockets are enabled, the computer may hang or a "Fatal Exception 0E" error message may occur.
  • If you suspended and resume the computer while a Logitech USB mouse is attached, the computer may never finish the resume operation.
  • If you rapidly plug and unplug an ALPS USB game pad, the computer may hang or display a fatal exception error message on a blue screen.
  • On a Toshiba portable computer equipped with USB support, if the PC Card controller is set to CardBus mode, and the computer is docked to a port replicator, the computer may hang when you eject it (undock) from the port replicator.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2.1. An update to address this problem is now available, but is not fully regression tested and should be applied only to computers experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft does not recommend implementing this update at this time. Contact the vendor of your OEM version of Windows 95 or Microsoft Technical Support for additional information about the availability of this update.
