The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows NT operating system, version 3.1
  • Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server, version 3.1

SYMPTOMS

If you have a computer name that contains spaces, the characters following the spaces are dropped to a second line in various warning dialog boxes in Server Manager.

CAUSE

Warning dialog boxes use the FormatMessage API to display text. FormatMessage does not support the use of spaces in computer names. It formats lines using spaces to designate line breaks.

RESOLUTION

To avoid this problem, do not use spaces in computer names.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT version 3.1. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
