SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade from Windows NT version 3.1 to Windows NT version 3.5, the following message appears in Event Viewer:

   Event ID: 8006
   Source: SRV
   Type: Error
   Description: The browser has received an illegal datagram from the
   remote computer <computer name> to name <domain name> on transport
   Nbf_Elnk31. The data is the datagram.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when an illegally formed Netlogon frame is received from the client computer. Windows NT version 3.5 correctly identifies the illegal frame and reports it in the System Log.

RESOLUTION

To correct this problem, do one or all of the following:

  • Upgrade to LAN Manager 2.2c or later.
  • Upgrade to Network Client version 3.0 for MS-DOS (available from the Windows NT Server version 3.5 CD).
  • Upgrade to Windows for Workgroups version 3.11 (available from the Windows NT Server version 3.5 CD).
