Security Options in File Manager for FAT or HPFS Available

SYMPTOMS

When you select a FAT or HPFS drive in File Manager, and choose Tree Only and then Directory Only from the View menu, the three Security options (Permissions, Auditing, and Owner) are available.

If you select Permissions or Auditing, the following error message appears:

   The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.

If you select Owner, the following error message appears:

   Not enough storage is available to process this command.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT versions 3.1 and 3.5. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
