Banner Always Printed When Using GSNW Print Gateway

  • Microsoft Windows NT Server versions 3.5 and 3.51

SYMPTOMS

If you print from a computer running Windows NT 3.5x to a NetWare Print Gateway defined on a computer running Windows NT 3.5x Server and Microsoft Gateway Service for NetWare (GSNW), you always receive a NetWare banner page before the print job.

The banner page is printed even if you clear the Print Banner check box in the GSNW options on the computer running Windows NT 3.5x Server. Disabling the banner option in the print queue configuration using the NetWare PrintCon utility does not prevent the banner from being printed.

If you print directly from the computer running Windows NT Server and GSNW, a banner is not printed. If you print to the same computer running Windows NT 3.5x Server and GSNW from a computer running Windows for Workgroups 3.11 a banner is not printed.

NOTE: This issue is most problematic when the printer on the NetWare print server is a postscript printer because NetWare is unable to generate postscript code for the banner.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, install Client Services for NetWare (CSNW) on the Windows NT Workstation so that you do not have to print through the print gateway on the Windows NT server running GSNW. Using CSNW will allow you to directly connect to the NetWare print queue. You can disable banners by running Control Panel and choosing CSNW.

To correct this problem, install the fix for Windows NT 3.5 mentioned below, or upgrade to Windows NT 3.51 (if you have not already done so) and install the latest U.S. Service Pack for Windows NT version 3.51.
