STOP 0x0000006F During System Initialization

• Microsoft Windows NT Workstation versions 3.51
• Microsoft Windows NT Server versions 3.51

SYMPTOMS

The following STOP message may appear when you boot Windows NT:

   STOP: 0x0000006F (0xC0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000,0x00000000)
   Session3_Initialization_Failed

CAUSE

A file critical to system initialization, such as Smss.exe, may be missing or corrupted.

RESOLUTION

To correct this problem, determine what recent process, such as an application installation, may have modified Windows NT files. Verify that these files where actually installed correctly. If they were installed correctly, you can try to replace them with the original version of the files.

Use one of the following methods to restore a missing or corrupted file:

• If Windows NT is installed on a FAT partition, copy the initialization file to the %SystemRoot%\System32 directory.

  -or-

• If Windows NT is installed on an NTFS partition, reinstall Windows NT to a separate directory. Log on as the same user with the same permissions and copy the initialization file to the %SystemRoot%\System32 directory.

  -or-

• Restart your computer with the three Windows NT 3.51 Setup disks and then do the following:

  1. Select R to Repair Windows NT.

  2. Select only Verify Windows NT System Files and continue.

  3. If you are prompted to insert Windows NT setup disk 4, press ESC to

        continue with the Repair process.
  

  4. After you complete the Emergency Repair procedure, reboot the

        computer and restart Windows NT.

• Restore Windows NT using a recent tape backup.
