The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows NT Workstation version 4.0
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server version 4.0

SUMMARY

Beginning with Windows NT version 4.0 Service Pack 2 it is possible to configure LPD passthrough on a per printer basis. Prior to service pack 2 the SimulatePassThrough registry entry affected all incoming LPR jobs to all printers on the server.

MORE INFORMATION

Use the following steps to implement LPD passthrough on a per printer basis:

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious, system-wide problems that may require you to reinstall Windows NT to correct them. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use this tool at your own risk.

  1. Apply service pack 2 or later to the computer running Windows NT version 4.0.

  2. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe) and go to the following registry location:

          HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control

            \Print\Printers\<<printername>>\PrinterDriverData

NOTE: printername = the name of the printer you wish to configure.

  3. On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following:

          Value Name: SimulatePassThrough
          Data Type: REG_DWORD

          String: 1

  4. Stop then restart TCP/IP Print Server and the Spooler service.
