Non-Paged Pool Memory Leak in IRP Pool Tag

Last reviewed: August 1, 1997
Article ID: Q171180
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server version 4.0

SYMPTOMS

Running a service or an application that makes repeated SCSI ioctl calls may cause the computer running Windows NT Server to stop responding (hang) or display a blue screen error message.

CAUSE

The computer running Windows NT Server is running out of non-paged pool memory. This happens because an I/O request packet (IRP) is being allocated and is never released.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT version 4.0. A supported fix is now available, but has not been fully regression-tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Service Pack that contains this fix.
