RRAS Does Not Enforce Strong Encryption for DUN Clients

SYMPTOMS

When a Dial-Up Networking (DUN) client connects to a 40-bit or 128-bit Routing and Remote Access Server that is configured to Require Data Encryption or Require Strong Data Encryption, the client is not disconnected if the selected data encryption negotiation fails to converge.

The following error may be logged in Event Viewer in the System Log on the server after the client has successfully established its connection:

   Event ID   : 20073
   Source     : Router
   Description: The following error occurred in the <protocol_name>
                module on port <port_name>. The PPP control protocol
                for this network protocol is not available on the
                server.

NOTE: This error may also be logged after the installation of the Routing and Remote Access Service Hotfix Update if 128-bit Strong Data Encryption is being used. Please see the fixes below for the resolution of this problem.

RESOLUTION

Obtain the following fix or wait for the next Routing and Remote Access Service Hotfix Update.

This fix should have the following time stamp:

   12/05/97  02:06p                59,152 Raspppen.dll (Intel)

   12/09/97  07:10p                35,600 Rasauth.dll  (Alpha)

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Routing and Remote Access Update for Windows NT 4.0. A supported fix is now available, but has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Service Pack that contains this fix.
