SFM: Disconnect Macintosh Clients before Dismounting Volume

Last reviewed: March 3, 1998
Article ID: Q180718
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows NT Server version 4.0

SYMPTOMS

Dismounting a Macintosh volume while Macintosh clients are still connected to that volume may result in a stop screen if the administrator immediately attempts to disconnect those sessions through the Users option of the Macfile application in Control Panel.

CAUSE

When the remote client is in the process of disconnecting and the administrator also starts disconnecting, there is an extremely small timing window where this memory may get freed twice.

RESOLUTION

Obtain the following fix or wait for the next Windows NT service pack.

This fix should have the following time stamp:

   12/12/97 08:58p 130,000 sfmsrv.sys (Intel)
   12/12/97 08:54p 233,616 sfmsrv.sys (Alpha)

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT version 4.0. A supported fix is now available, but has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Service Pack that contains this fix. Contact Microsoft Technical Support for more information.
