Hanging Indents Are Not Recorded Using Format Style

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows version 6.0

SYMPTOMS

When you record a macro that creates a Bullets and Numbering style, Word for Windows does not record any hanging indent formatting you define. For example, if your recorded macro creates a numbering style with the following style definition, the "Hanging 0.25"" portion of the definition is missing when you run the macro and examine the resulting style:

Normal + Indent: Hanging 0.25", Auto Numbering

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word for Windows. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUND

To record a macro that retains the hanging indent formatting in your style definition, choose the Modify button in the Tools Bullets and Numbering dialog box after you select the bullet or numbering style. You do not need to change any settings in the Modify Numbered List or Modify Bulleted List dialog boxes; simply choosing OK causes Word to record the hanging indent formatting. Below are step-by-step instructions for this workaround:

  1. From the Tools menu, choose Macro.

  2. Type a Macro Name and then choose the Record button.

  3. Modify any settings in the Record Macro dialog box and then choose
OK.

  1. From the Format menu, choose Style.

  2. Choose the New button and then choose the Format button. From the list that appears, select Numbering.

  3. Select the desired Bulleted or Numbered list style and then choose the Modify button.

  4. Choose OK in the Modify Numbered List or Modify Bulleted List dialog box, then choose OK in the Bullets and Numbering dialog box.

  5. Choose OK in the New Style dialog box and then choose Close in the Format Style dialog box.

  6. Choose the Stop button on the Macro toolbar.
