SYMPTOMS

If you are running under a beta (prerelease) version of Microsoft Windows version 3.1, the following error message may occur when you start Word for Windows:

MSWORD caused a GP Fault error in OLE2.DLL.

CAUSE

Word 6.0 is designed to run properly on the retail release of Windows 3.1; Microsoft cannot guarantee the functionality of Word running under a beta build of Windows.

RESOLUTION

To determine whether you are running a beta version of Windows 3.1, switch to Windows Program Manager and choose About Program Manager from the Help menu. "Version 3.1" should display in the dialog box. If there is a period and any numbers following "3.1," you are running a beta version of Windows. Microsoft has received reports of this problem from customers running the following beta versions:

   3.1.068
   3.1.070
   3.1.071
   3.1.0xx

To resolve the problem, obtain the retail version of Windows 3.1. To obtain new or updated Microsoft products, call Microsoft End User Sales at (800) 426-9400. If you are outside the United States, contact your local subsidiary. To locate your subsidiary, see the Microsoft World Wide Offices Web site at:
