WD6X: Tabs Not Included in Table of Contents or Index

Last reviewed: February 10, 1998
Article ID: Q110418
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a, 6.0c
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, version 6.0

SYMPTOMS

If text in a table of contents or an index entry contains a tab, Word does not include that tab in the compiled table of contents. This behavior applies to table of contents entries that are created with a heading style or a TC field.

CAUSE

By removing tabs from your table of contents or index entries, Word eliminates the possibility of awkward or inappropriate spacing in your compiled table of contents, especially where custom tab settings are concerned.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the programs listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Word 7.x for Windows and in Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition.
